Emotions
& Needs

Emotions are part of the way your mind and body respond to experience. They can signal that something matters, something has changed or something may need your attention.

Becoming more aware of emotions does not mean letting them control every decision. It means learning to notice them, understand them and become curious about what may be underneath them.

An emotion does not always tell you what to do next. Sometimes it simply tells you that something deserves your attention.
Understand

Emotions are information, not instructions.

Emotions can help you notice how you are experiencing a situation. They are influenced by context, previous experiences, expectations, thoughts and the state of your body.

Emotions can point toward meaning.

Anger may appear when something feels unfair, intrusive or beyond your limits.

Sadness may appear around loss, disappointment or something important that did not happen as hoped.

Fear may appear when your mind or body detects uncertainty, danger or the possibility of loss.

Needs add context.

Beneath an emotion there may be a need for safety, rest, clarity, respect, connection, autonomy, reassurance or space.

Understanding the need does not automatically tell you how to respond. It simply gives you another layer of information about what may be happening.

Notice

An emotion can show up in more than one place.

You may notice emotions through thoughts, body sensations, urges, behaviour or changes in attention.

01

Thoughts

Notice the language in your mind. Does everything suddenly feel urgent, hopeless, unfair, unsafe or difficult to trust?

02

Body sensations

Notice changes such as tension, heaviness, warmth, restlessness, tightness or changes in breathing.

03

Urges

Emotions can come with an urge to leave, confront, hide, explain, seek reassurance or become quiet.

04

Behaviour

You may notice yourself moving faster, speaking differently, withdrawing or becoming more focused on control.

05

Attention

Strong emotions can narrow attention. You may become focused on one threat, one problem or one interpretation.

06

Needs

Once you notice the emotion, gently ask what may be missing, threatened or important in that moment.

Nervous system awareness

Sometimes your body responds before your mind has words.

The nervous system is constantly responding to what is happening inside and around you. Becoming aware of body signals can help you notice when something has activated stress, uncertainty or a sense of safety.

Signal 01

Tension

Jaw tension, tight shoulders, clenched hands or a feeling of holding yourself very still.

Signal 02

Activation

Faster thoughts, restlessness, a racing heart or a strong urge to act immediately.

Signal 03

Withdrawal

Feeling distant, quiet, tired, numb or less able to connect with what is happening.

Signal 04

Settling

Breathing becomes easier, muscles soften and attention begins to feel more flexible again.

Reflect

Ask what the emotion may be pointing toward.

Choose one question that feels useful. You do not need to find the perfect answer.

What emotion has been returning most often lately?
What usually happens just before this emotion appears?
What happens in my body when this emotion becomes stronger?
What do I usually do when I feel this way?
What might this emotion be asking me to pay attention to?
What need may be present underneath this reaction?
Nasia Experiment

Name the experience before explaining it.

The next time you notice a stronger emotional response, try delaying the explanation for a moment.

Begin with observation. You can make sense of it afterwards.

Try noticing: I feel...

In my body I notice...

My first urge is...

What happened just before this was...

What I may need right now is...
Journal

Let the emotion become more specific.

Writing can help separate the emotion itself from the story that immediately forms around it.

Start with the experience.

You do not need to decide whether your emotion is reasonable. Begin by describing what you notice and what may matter underneath it.

Right now I feel...
The situation that seems connected to this is...
My body seems to be telling me...
The thought that keeps returning is...
What I may need underneath this emotion is...

The Emotion and Need Map

This tool helps you slow down an emotional moment and look at it from several angles.

The aim is not to prove whether the emotion is right or wrong. The aim is to understand what may be happening.

Situation What happened?
Emotion What am I feeling?
Body What do I notice physically?
Thought What am I telling myself about the situation?
Need What may feel important, missing or threatened?
Response What would support me without automatically following the first impulse?
A gentle reminder

Feeling something strongly does not always mean you need to act immediately.

Feelings can be valid information.

You can acknowledge an emotion without ignoring it and without allowing it to make every decision for you.

Awareness creates room to listen before responding.

Needs do not always have one solution.

Recognising a need for safety, rest, connection or respect does not automatically tell you what action to take.

It gives you useful information that can guide a more considered response.

“

An emotion can be heard without being obeyed.

When you become more familiar with what you feel, what happens in your body and what you may need, you create more space for a thoughtful response.
